Geezer Butler Considering Solo Album With Supergroup Likely Finished

The COVID-19 pandemic likely brought Geezer Butler's Deadland Ritual supergroup to an end.

The short-lived band featured the co-founding Black Sabbath bassist alongside ex-Guns N' Roses drummer Matt Sorum, Billy Idol guitarist Steve Stevens and ex-Apocalyptica singer Franky Perez.

Initially launched in late-2018, the band released two excellent singles — "Broken and Bruised" and "Down in Flames" — before hitting the festival circuit for a handful of live gigs in 2019.

The band had plans to record and album and do more extensive touring, but the coronavirus crisis closed that window, Butler tells Bass Magazine.

"We had about 13 or 14 songs written, and we were about to go into the studio when the pandemic came along," he said. "And now Steve won't leave his house [laughs], and so I think the singer [Franky Perez] is doing something else, and Matt is doing something also."

While the project might be defunct as a band, Butler says he "might rescue" some of the Deadland Ritual song ideas for a future solo album.

After retiring Black Sabbath in 2017, Butler took the better part of the following year to travel and try and enjoy retirement. After getting bored at home, Butler started writing music and was soon contacted by Sorum, who was trying to start a new band. It was just the situation Butler was looking for.
