On this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends, Zach Braff and Donald Faison talk about the Scrubs season two episode “My Kingdom,” when J.D. gets to be a surgeon, and one of the “cool kids,” for a week. They observe that this episode, and Scrubs in general, is often about the characters being very concerned with what people think of them; Zach thinks that’s a universal human condition. “Even if you're the most successful, confident person in the world, I’m sure you battle self-doubt and how you’re perceived,” he says. They also imagine a Pen15-esque remake of Scrubs, call out their producer Danl for having a Palm Pilot back in the day, and stress to everyone the importance of prostate exams. “Let ‘em go in, let ‘em touch it,” Zach says. “You’re missing out.”
Donald’s character, Turk, is coaching J.D. in this episode about how to be cool, and ends up with some of Zach’s favorite shots in the series, including the “pimp walk” with Donald showing off his “C-cups” and a scene where he’s dancing. Donald says he was very self-conscious about his body while shooting this episode, but now he wishes he were that svelte; he has gained some weight during the quarantine. Zach asks if it would bother him if paparazzi took his photo and ran it with a line about him looking like a beached whale, but Donald says, “If paparazzi is taking pictures of me again, I don’t give a f**k what they say – take pictures of my Hershey’s Kisses and my big belly!....Congrats, Donald, you’re back on the map!”
This is the first time J.D. orders an Appletini, “easy on the -tini,” and also the first episode where Dr. Cox and the Janitor meet. Zach loves the wigs they wear in their college flashback, and they float the idea of a college years remake show, where Zach and Donald’s “old a**es” play their characters, but surround themselves with actual college-aged actors, similar to the show Pen15. “That’s the f**king remake!” Zach decides. They also talk about the new movie Zach has coming out with Robert De Niro, Donald reminds us of some classic jingles, and they talk about the importance of being in the same “emoji family,” before the least-interested guest of the podcast’s history comes on.
