Bradley Cooper Wanted Jack White to Play Lead Male Role in 'A Star Is Born'

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's chemistry in A Star Is Born is undeniable, but if the actor had his way, there would've been a different lead male role starring in his directorial debut.

“I saw this other person that I wanted to do this, who is an actual musician,” Cooper told Variety during an in-depth feature with Gaga. “But [the studio] wouldn’t make the movie with him.”

Though he didn't give names, the magazine notes a source claiming Jack White was the person Cooper had in mind to play Jackson Maine.

White isn't the first musician who could've starred in the newest iteration of A Star Is Born. “Anytime a big pop star broke, we would talk about it,” the film’s producer Bill Gerber said of the remake. “Hey, should we do A Star Is Born with Lauryn Hill or Aaliyah? Whitney Houston had been talked about way back when.”

Previous proposals also included Clint Eastwood sitting in the director's chair with Cooper playing Maine and Beyonce cast as Ally.

If Cooper's vision had come to life, it wouldn't have been the former White Stripes frontman's first foray into acting. His movie credits include Coffee and Cigarettes, Cold Mountain, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.
